LG Shows Off Wallpaper Display Under 1mm Thick

The screen-making subsidiary of LG called LG Display, is dedicated to OLED panels and has developed an incredibly thin television. In LG Display's home country of South Korea, they held a press event on Tuesday, to show off a "wallpaper" proof-of-concept television. The 55-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display weighs 1.9 kilograms and is less than a millimeter thick. The TV can also stick to the wall by using a magnetic mat that you can attach to your wall. When you want to remove the display, you peel the screen off the mat from the wall.

LG Display launching this screen was only part of the bigger picture of what their future holds. LG Display has said its display strategy will be based on OLED technology. The head of LG Display's OLED Business Unit Sang-Deog Yeo said in a press release "OLED represents a groundbreaking technology not only for the company but also for the industry."

Years ago, display technology was focused on tech like LCD (liquid crystal display) and plasma, but now, it's starting to lean more towards LED technology.

You very well might be seeing a lot of OLED in the future. LG Display believes OLED could be used in all display technology products in the future. The technology put an organic compound layer that allows its displays to not only be thin but also curved. The organic material also lets off its own light, so it doesn't need a backlight. This helps with making the screens so thin that OLED is also the ideal choice for a lot of wearables and other mobile products, not just TVs.

Companies like LG, Samsung and Sony have used some OLED screens, but the cost of display production is rather high. Some of that cost is because of production failures, meaning more waste increases the costs of the screens that actually make it through production. Then those costs are passed to consumers. For example, LG's 65-inch, 4K OLED TV costs $9,000.

LG also said at Tuesday's press event that it is making significant progress in developing OLEDs. The company is the first to mass-produce large-screen OLEDs for televisions and says its yield has hit 80%, still lower than LCDs. The issues with yield as well as the price, may mean displays like the "wallpaper" display, won't be available at stores for a reasonable price in the near future.

Also on Tuesday, LG Display announced that they expect to sell 600,000 OLED TV panels this year and 1.5 million panels next year. The company also shared comments by a professor at the University of Rochester in New York and "the father of OLED" Ching W. Tang. He believes we won't be seeing a lot of OLED displays for another 5-10 years. He claims then that OLED could outpace LCDs altogether.

The "wallpaper" display seems like a pretty cool idea, but I can't imagine how much they will be charging for something like that. I'm still prepared to start seeing a lot more OLED products to come.

Amazing New HDTV from LG

LG 47LE5500LG is now introducing their latest creation, the LG 47LE5500. With its razor-thin profile and lightly tinted bezel, it makes for a show-stopping centerpiece in your family room or home theater. The LG 47LE5500 also brings you sharp images, great color quality, and plenty of Web apps like Netflix and VUDU. This 47-inch HDTV uses LED backlighting with local dimming making it incredibly energy efficient.

The 47-inch panel on the 47LE5500 is inset into a 1.2-inch thick black cabinet. It's thinner then most of the TV’s recently released. Both the top and side bezels are 1.5 inches wide, and the bottom bezel is 2.5 inches wide. All four sides of the 47LE5500 have a beautiful black glossy finish and feature reddish accents. The screen itself is outstanding with its matte, non-reflective, anti-glare coating. The screen is set comfortably on a sturdy rectangular base that offers easy swivel maneuverability.

The 47LE5500 has 10-watt down-firing speakers mounted on the bottom of the cabinet. The speakers have excellent sound, and the volume can be turned up to full capacity without the slightest distortion. The downside to the sound system on this unit is that due to the slim cabinet design you don't get a whole lot of bass response.

The LG 47LE5500 sports seven touch sensitive buttons and a power switch positioned along the right side of the lower bezel. The buttons remain dark and unnoticed until you touch one of the buttons, at which point they all glow white and become easily visible.
As with many other LG products, the mean system is very straightforward and easy to use, and it offers a variety of basic and advanced settings. The 47LE5500 has five present video modes Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Sport, and Game. It also has two expert modes for advanced calibration purposes that allow you to change settings such as black level, gamma, skin color, color gamut, and individual color saturation levels.

Like most other LG TV’s, the 47LE5500’s remote control is well designed and easy to use. It features 49 buttons that are backlit and incredibly responsive. The only button that is somewhat fussy at times is the rocker switch. Dedicated NetCast, Widget, and Energy Saving buttons make it easy to toggle between Web services or switch into one of four power usage modes.

The 47LE5500 is equipped with a nice selection of connections. Conveniently located on the left side of the cabinet are two USB ports, a set of audio inputs, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack. Then on the back of the unit there are three additional HDMI jacks, a port for connecting to an optional wireless media hub, a PC (VGA) input, digital audio-in and out connectors, two sets of component A/V ports, a set of composite A/V ports, and a coaxial TV connector.

Also on the 47LE5500, you have access to a nice variety of Web Apps such as Yahoo widgets. Widgets include weather, sports, news, and finance channels along with games. Social networking apps like Twitter and Flickr are also available. It also has NetCast which offers Netflix, VUDU, and YouTube video streaming as well as Picasa Web Albums.

Overall, LG's 47LE5500 delivers good color and HD quality. Its 1.5-inch thick cabinet is quite pleasing, and its power-saving capability is a definite plus for energy-conscious consumers. Although its current listing price is a bit high at $2,100, the good new is that smart online shopping can help you knock of a good few hundred buck off the listing price!

LG Full HD 3D LCD Monitors

LG Full HD 3D MonitorEverything just has to be in 3D nowadays doesn't it? It started off with every animated movie and it's mother coming out in 3D and now the 3D hand is slowly clutching around our computer monitors. In a recent press release, LG announced the world's first mass produced Full HD 3D-capable monitor.

This new monitor is a 23-inch thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD). The monitor itself delivers full HD resolution and offers a picture almost two times as crisp as currently available HD 3D displays. Being as this monitor is apart of LG, it adopts the company's proprietary technologies like "high performance 3D exclusive controller" which can process over twice as much image data as some of the other HD 3D LCDs and copper bus line. This helps to improve the resolution of the monitor as well as the picture quality. The LG monitor is also a "double threat" as it can not only produce 3D images but also reproduce 2D images which allows the user to switch back and forth between 2D and 3D.

3D images isn't something new. The technology has been around on video games, movies and different animations. However, this is the first time that it has full HD resolution. LG hopes that this panel will help boost the development of high resolution 3D contents all the while letting consumers view true-to-life 3D images. In a statement from LG Display's Vice President and head of IT marketing Davis Lee, "LG Display has made a major breakthrough in the display industry race to deliver the depth and dynamic nature of 3D images. LG Display will continue with efforts to keep pace with the fast growing 3D market with leading 3D technology and products in order to create new value for customers."

More and more industry partners are beginning to shift their focus of product away from 2D technologies and towards 3D technologies. This shift in product is expected to to make the 3D display market grow at a very fast pace. Plans have recently been brought to light by the Korea Communications Commission to start a trial service for the world's first full HD 3D terrestrial broadcasting from the second half of 2010. Also announced in Japan and the UK is a launch of trial services for 3D satellite broadcasts.

The 3D revolution is coming, whether you asked for it to or not and with products like mass produced HD 3D monitors, it looks like there is no getting around the fact that 3D is taking over. I guess we better start getting used to it.
