HP Unveils New TouchSmart 620 All-in-One 3D PC

There are a lot of innovations in the computer world these days, two of the biggest being 3D and all-in-one devices. On the one hand, you have the option of playing games and watching movies and content in full 3D quality, on the other you have the convenience of having your tower and monitor all rolled into one device, freeing up a lot of space in your office or at your desk at home. However, HP thinks that these two innovations should become one and has created a device to make that happen. Meet the HP TouchSmart 620 3D Edition.

The TouchSmart 620 3D Edition is a tower-free desktop that HP is adding to its already populated lineup of all-in-one PCs. This device is the love child of the HP TouchSmart 610 and a 23" 3D touchscreen monitor, and inside the rather bulky (for an all-in-one) 4.1" thick display you'll find a 3.1GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, a 1.5TB hard drive, Blu-ray drive and an AMD Radeon HD 6650 (or 6670) graphics card. That is pretty good, especially if you consider the fact that the mid-range 6670 debuted in April and is capable of averaging frame rates in the low 30s on games like Crysis 2 on high settings in the device's native 1,920 x 1,080 resolution.

In addition to that, the TouchSmart 620 also keeps the flexible ergonomics of the TouchSmart 610. The screen is capable of swiveling up to 180 degrees and reclines up to 60 degrees (nearly flat), allowing you to have considerable leverage when moving things around to mitigate glare or other effects. Fire up 3D mode and you will be using software from TriDef designed to make accessing the 3D capabilities of the display more user-friendly.

The base model of the device, which will cost you $1,800, includes a dual-lens camera capable of grabbing 3D video as well as still shots, a TV tuner and also comes with a pair of active shutter glasses.

This isn't the first all-in-one PC to come with 3D capabilities, however. Sony, Lenovo, MSI and Asus have all debuted 3D all-in-ones as well. However, as far as pricing goes, the HP TouchSmart 620 is less expensive than Sony's Viao L-Series 3D Edition, which comes with an i7 processor and a 3TB hard drive for $2,300. On the other hand, the TouchSmart 620 is considerably more expensive than Lenovo's IdeaCenter B520 that offers an i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU for $1,300.

Nevertheless, people are, for some reason, obsessed with 3D these days, so this device will obviously find itself in more than a few homes, if only for the HP brand, not to mention the fact that this device is aimed at the holiday season. Whether or not people will care in a year or so is still up in the air.

HP Sues AU Optronics for Fixing LCD Panel Prices

HP recently filed a law suit against AU Optronics in which HP accused the company of conspiring to fix prices of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display panels according to the filing.

According to a document filed on August 19 in federal court in San Francisco by HP Vice President and General Manager for HP's Displays Business Jun Kim, a complaint for damages alleging violations of antitrust laws was filed under seal in order to conceal confidential information about HP's process for acquiring LCD panels from HP's competitors.

According to a related document, AUO and other companies "conspired to fix the prices of LCD panels". The document is related to a complaint about a pending group case that was filed against LCD makers on behalf of purchasers of the screens used in personal computers, televisions and mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

Yawen Hsiao, a spokeswoman for AUO, was not immediately aware of the complaint when recently contacted for information by multiple media outlets. Hsiao also declined to comment further on anything regarding such complaints or a lawsuit between AUO and HP. HP is one of the largest clients AUO has and provides the company with panels used in laptops and computer monitors.

However, if it is true that HP is suing AUO for fixing prices, it wouldn't be surprising. The Taiwanese company was indicted last year for supposedly conspiring to fix prices on flat-panel screens sold around the world. The conspiracy lasted from 2001 until 2006. Apple, Dell and HP were among the many companies directly affected by the supposed scheme according to the United States Justice Department.

HP Unveils New Slim 22-Inch LED Monitor

HP had quite a bit to announce yesterday, the most interesting being a device that, believe it or not, is not even a computer. However, HP did unveil three new computers as well: the 13.3-inch ProBook 5330m, which measures only an inch thick and starts at $800, the new 12.5-inch EliteBook 2560p, which is the smallest and lightest notebook to come from HP to date, and the Mini 210 which comes with some new color options as well as "Beats" audio.

Also unveiled by HP was their new DataPass service. If you have purchased a notebook from HP that has a compatible 3G chip, then you have the option of having access to "pre-paid 3G mobile broadband services that allows you to purchase wireless broadband data using major mobile carriers in the United States without being tied down by contracts, hotspots and set-up fees," according to HP. This service runs anywhere from $5 to $30 a month for anywhere between 75 and 1000 megabytes of data via Sprint's network.

But that's not what you came here to see. No you came because you heard about this really cool new monitor from HP. Well you heard correctly. The coolest thing to be unveiled by HP is the new 22-inch LED-backlit monitor that comes with a full 1920x1080 HD resolution as well as a DisplayPort connector. This pretty thing is known as the HP Elite L2201x and will run you $250 when it becomes available in June.

Other specs on this thing include a 5,000:1 static contrast ratio and a 16ms response time. The monitor, as you can tell from the pictures, is very sleek. It only weighs 7.3lbs and measures 19.94 x 4.89 x 14.22 (W x D x H) inches. All I can say is June needs to get here fast.
